3-4 year olds

Q How are children developing?
  • Their speech is more developed, they like jokes and nonsense talk and repeated songs, rhymes and stories.
  • They are asking lots of Why? When? and How? questions. Many are curious about what they were like as a baby and where they came from, particularly if there are new babies in the family.
  • They are around other children more at this stage, if attending nursery, and  are learning from them.
Q What do they need from their parents?
  • To be able to answer questions simply and honestly
  • To help them understand enough about where babies come from. Click here for appropriate books available in your local library.
  • To give them names for genital area - penis, vulva, bottom etc Suggested words to use to help children name body parts.
  • To help them understand feelings and have basic words to describe them
  • To have thought about how to respond to them touching their genitals at home and in public. Some suggestions
